Wait whaaaaaat?? Two in one day?! Yeah this wasn’t actually planned from the beginning, but I had a delay because of the extra typesetting with the last episode so I just started this one up in the meantime and…eventually they kinda just synced up with each other. At least this makes up for my prolonged inability to get to releasing already :L
This episode’s new Yo-kai was Wall Guy, who…uh…yeah that’s kinda it I think. Just a wall who’s a guy. The closest thing I could think of that might be a sort of pun is that there is one kanji (礙), of which one of the readings is gai, that means
“obstruct,” “block,” “hinder,” etc. It doesn’t seem to be a particularly common kanji though so that’s definitely a reach (especially considering that the target audience for this series probably couldn’t even read said kanji). Wall Guy’s localized name is “Judgebrick,” which is…also kind of a mishmash of two words, I guess. Nobody found it easy to name this one, huh?
No idea when I’m gonna get around to the next episode but there’s already a big pun just based on the title of one of the segments, so that’s fun. I’ll wait until we get to that episode to explain it, though. Anyway, hope you enjoyed today’s double release.

So here we are jumping a whole ten episodes away from my last release. I would have preferred to have this out sooner but alas it was “one of those” episodes with regards to the typesetting. Special thanks to Lumpstud and Noroinohanako for help with some particularly difficult spots (I could’ve sworn I put Lumpstud in the episode credits but I didn’t realize until after the final encode was being submitted that she wasn’t there, so please be aware that she did contribute). This was a very good episode if I do say so myself (at least the last two segments). It’s nice to see a Yo-kai of the Day segment end on a sweet note with no last-minute shock jokes, and I’m sure you all know how I feel about the “Komarly Hills” gang…
This episode’s Yo-kai of the Day is Nopperabo, a Yo-kai from YW2 to break the recent trend of all the new Yo-kai being from 3. Being a classic Yo-kai, Nopperabo’s name is taken from the mythological “faceless ghost” (or faceless monk), or nopperabou (のっぺらぼう). Here’s some background, if you’re interested. “Faysoff” was the name they went with in the English dub, as the classic Yo-kai’s names are usually changed from the originals (though interestingly, the 7 Lucky Gods’ names in YW3 were kept).
There was also a multitude of puns in this episode that I localized, but here’s the literal translations for the curious:

This particular line is a very loose translation I made to save those who aren’t interested in reading a lengthy translation note from having to do so. But since you’re reading this, I betting that you won’t mind. Allow me to explain.
A closer translation is “I wonder if grandma’s setting up a formal marriage interview with me!” or “I wonder if grandma’s setting up an omiai with me!”
Omiai/miai (お見合い/見合い) or formal marriage interview (a concept that’s probably alien to those who haven’t experienced collectivist societies) is a Japanese traditional custom in which a woman and a man are introduced to each other (usually by their parents or more senior family members) to consider the possibility of marriage. If you ask me, the short song that Micchi sings at 7:10 is probably a reference to the memorable way the chorus lyrics are sung in Whitney Houston’s song “I Will Always Love You”.
Mitsumatanodzuchi and Mitsumatamidzuchi’s names are so similar, I decided to color-code them in the subs so that they’re easier to follow.

So with this being a much older episode than we’re actually up to, some of the segments that have already ended are back temporarily (unless you’re watching in order in the first place). But more importantly, let me explain the version 1 and version 2 thing:
Because the Yo-kai of the day (Gojidatsujii) segment is very wordplay-centric, I ran a poll on Twitter asking if viewers wanted a more literal translation of all the wordplay with translator’s notes or if they wanted to see the segment “localized” whenever possible. Ultimately, Noroinohanako and I decided to just do both. Since the wordplay also coincides heavily with the visuals, Noroino generously offered to do all the typesetting for the segment, and it looks really good! Most of the signs/text are completely redone to match the English localization (except for one joke toward the end, which we found pretty impossible to localize while maintaining the same effect). The differences are briefly explained in the subs themselves depending on what version you’re watching, but that’s the gist of it, and why this episode took a lot of extra time. If you’re interested in version 2, I’d recommend running the softsub version on a strong computer. It will definitely lag on older machines.
Anyway, the Yo-kai of the day himself is Gojidatsujii. This pun is quite layered - it comes from goji (誤字), “misprint,” datsuji (脱字), “missing letter,” and jii
(爺), “old man.” From what I can tell, the fact that he’s an apple…wizard…thing doesn’t have anything to do with the name itself. In English, Gojidatsujii became “Mister Typoo.” This is mentioned in the version 2 subs, which I guess is a perk of this coming out so late - this episode’s production actually began months before YW3 was out in PAL regions!
Also, we technically got a “new” Yo-kai in UZApyon, which is obviously a corruption of USApyon based on the word uzai (ウザイ), slang for “annoying” or “noisy.” I rewrote the joke a bit in the episode itself, but that’s why Dark Komasan says the name is fitting for UZApyon.
Keep in mind if you’ve been waiting to watch in order that some of the episodes that follow this one will be missing certain conventions, like some preview text, the pre-summon neon sign, and the new thing I added this episode, which is captions for certain sound effects (I took a page out of the Shadowside sub book there). Obviously, that’s because this episode simply was finalized later than them, so I was able to add those changes in.

I don’t really have much to write as far as translations notes are concerned. Except one thing that comes to mind is the ramen topping mentioned at the end are more specifically called “naruto” (I didn’t really want to confuse most people who are probably more familiar with the anime series Naruto).
Generally, Kamaboko are slices of steamed fish cake. But the most common kind of kamaboko (as a topping on ramen) is naruto (which generally also means anything that’s spiral or whirlpool shaped, pictured below)
Over time, different designs for ramen kamaboko have emerged over the past several years to spice things up in Japanese pop-up shops and grocery aisles. (Including characters from Yo-kai Watch and other franchises)
